Een politiek prominente persoon (PEP) is een persoon die momenteel een belangrijke publieke functie bekleedt of voorheen bekleedde, alsook zijn naaste familie en goede vrienden. Door de aard van hun positie en macht lopen PEP's een groter risico op corruptie, omkoping en het witwassen van geld.

Staatshoofden, ambtenaren, militaire topleiders en managers van staatsbedrijven zijn enkele voorbeelden van PEP's. Naaste verwanten en directe familieleden van PEP's kunnen echtgenoten, kinderen, ouders, broers en zussen en zakenpartners zijn.


Welke verplichtingen hebben financiële instellingen tegenover PEP's?

Om het gevaar van witwassen en andere financiële misdrijven te verminderen, wordt van financiële instellingen zoals banken verwacht dat zij verscherpte zorgvuldigheidsprocedures toepassen wanneer zij te maken hebben met PEP's en hun medewerkers.

De anti-witwasrichtlijn en de Belgische nationale wet bepalen dat financiële instellingen moeten beschikken over "adequate risicobeheersystemen, met inbegrip van passende, op het risico afgestemde procedures, om vast te stellen of de cliënt, een lasthebber van de cliënt of de uiteindelijke begunstigde van de cliënt een politiek prominente persoon is of is geworden."
