Euro area trade deficit widens to €7.8 bn in May 2026

In May 2026, the euro area recorded a €7.8 billion deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world, a sharp reversal from a €15.0 billion surplus in May 2025. The deterioration was driven by a widening energy deficit and reduced surpluses in machinery, vehicles, and chemicals. EU trade balance also worsened, posting a €12.1 billion deficit.
