Euro Area Government Deficit at 3.1% of GDP in Q1 2026
Eurostat reports that the seasonally adjusted general government deficit stood at 3.1% of GDP in both the euro area and the EU in Q1 2026, a slight decrease from Q4 2025. Total revenue and expenditure ratios also declined marginally.

The European Commission has launched two initiatives under its financial literacy strategy: a call for submissions of best practices in investing, saving, and financial risk literacy (deadline 30 October 2026), and a call for stakeholders to participate in roundtables to develop a voluntary European code of conduct for financial literacy initiatives (deadline 16 September 2026). The code is expected to be adopted in Q1 2027.

Euro Area Government Debt Rises to 88.9% of GDP in Q1 2026
Eurostat reports that the euro area government debt-to-GDP ratio rose to 88.9% in Q1 2026, up from 87.7% in Q4 2025. The EU ratio increased to 82.9%. Notable increases were seen in Hungary, Lithuania, and France, while Greece recorded the largest decrease.

Construction Output Up 0.4% in Euro Area in May 2026
Eurostat reports a 0.4% monthly increase in construction production in the euro area and 0.3% in the EU for May 2026. Year-on-year, production rose by 1.2% in the euro area and 1.8% in the EU, with notable divergences across Member States and sectors.
