The protection of privacy has grown to be of utmost importance in a society where our every action is digitally recorded and where personal information is exchanged like an untraceable currency. European Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) have launched a privacy revolution and established the global standard for data protection in an era characterized by data-hungry and profit-seeking businesses.

Since its inception in 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has revolutionized the way EU citizen’s privacy is protected, not just in Europe but around the world. A key aspect of the legislation is the establishment of data protection authorities across EU member states. These data protection authorities have emerged as the forerunners of privacy rights, ensuring GDPR compliance and fining any organization that violates the fundamentals of data protection.

Let’s explore what a DPA does, the importance of the EDPB in the world of data protection authorities, and the full list of DPAs along with their websites.

What are Data Protection Authorities (DPA)?

The European Commission website gives a comprehensive definition of Data Protection Authority: DPAs are independent public authorities that supervise, through investigative and corrective powers, the application of the data protection law. They provide expert advice on data protection issues and handle complaints lodged against violations of the GDPR and the relevant national laws. There is one in each EU Member State.

What is the European Data Protection Board (EDPB)?

EDPB European Data Protection Board
The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) is an independent European body, which contributes to the consistent application of data protection rules throughout the European Union, and promotes cooperation between the EU’s data protection authorities.

The EDPB is composed of representatives of the national data protection authorities, and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). EDPB is established by the GDPR, and is based in Brussels.
